About Me?

Albert (Bert) Hamilton was born in Northern Ireland and educated in Canada and Northern Ireland. His career as an indentured apprentice, engineer, project manager, academic and author spans the period 1955 to date.

He has the equivalent of a bachelor degree qualification in mechanical engineering and an honours degree in civil engineering from The Queens University of Belfast. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the Institution of Engineers of Ireland. He holds Association memberships of the Association of Project Management (Fellow) and the Project Management Institute (Member)

He served an engineering apprenticeship between 1955 and 1960 at the engine works of Harland & Wolff in Belfast, which was followed by periods working as a sea-going marine engineer and on nuclear submarine engine design.

During the period 1966 to 1991 he worked on conceptual investigations, project design, contractor procurement, and the on-site installation and commissioning of major international projects. He has worked as a civil and mechanical engineer, supervisor and manager of projects in Canada, Malawi, South Africa, United Kingdom and Zambia, and also in the regions of Central America and the Far East.

He lives in retirement in County Down, Northern Ireland since 2012.

During the period 1991-2000 he was Kent Professor of Project Management at a university in the Republic of Ireland.

He has held visiting Professorships at a number of universities within the United Kingdom and retired in 2019 from the Faculty of London Middlesex University as honorary Professor at the National Centre for Project Management. He has also undertaken non-executive tenures for professional engineering Institutions and project management Associations.

Professor Hamilton was often involved in offering advice and assistance on major projects and in providing a range of personal development training programmes for teams of individuals engaged in the management of projects.

His focus was always on the provision of advice to organisations on how to achieve strategic objectives using projects and tactical know-how in the management of individual projects.

He has provided consultancy services in project management problem solving to both the private and public sectors, in a broad range of industries. The principal industries include:

  • building and construction
  • energy, specifically electricity generation
  • heavy industry
  • pharmaceutical production
  • societal infrastructure
